Kane School

Pilates Certification

Three-Step Process

1. Core Muscle Anatomy

We believe that an in-depth knowledge of anatomy is essential for movement instructors. The Core Muscle Anatomy course filters volumes of movement information into fundamentals directly applicable to the Kane School core principles and crucial to understanding biomechanics, palpation and assessment. Through hands-on work and movement, students learn about anatomy in real time. Transferable to multiple modalities, this interactive course provides a solid foundation for movement professionals of all disciplines. It is also an inspiring knowledge refresher for current teachers or anyone curious about the human body. Completion of CMA (or testing out) is required before starting Comprehensive Mat.

2. Comprehensive Mat

This course is divided into two weekends. The first weekend introduces the 9 foundational principles of the Kane School through the lens of anatomy, movement and pre-pilates exercises. The pre-pilates exercises deepen students’ knowledge about the body first hand, and are also used as assessment tools students can use to program classes and sessions. In the second weekend, students learn the classical choreography, contraindications, modifications, how to integrate props and strategies for programming. Students can graduate as a fully certified comprehensive pilates mat instructor after completing their independent hours and passing their exam. Completion of this course is required before starting the Apparatus Training.

3. Apparatus Training

The Kane School’s Apparatus Training builds on CMA and Comprehensive Mat to train highly competent instructors to teach on all 5 pieces of apparatus, program for a wide range of injuries, contraindications and conditions, and grow into well-rounded pilates professionals. This thoughtfully layered course is divided into two Phases. Phase 1 consists of learning all levels of the classical choreography on the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Barrel and Spine Corrector. Phase 2 consists of 4 modules focused on anatomy, biomechanics, touch and common pathologies in all regions of the body. These courses take instructors to the next level of integrating anatomy knowledge, having respect for the body, teaching embodiment, thinking creatively and solving problems in real time. There is an emphasis on creating a safe environment to move in and learning to see with your hands. Students are encouraged to continue their education and develop a vision for who they are as individuals in the movement field.

My time at the Kane School has been full of personal and professional growth. The thoughtfully-scaffolded structure of the Basic Training program allowed me to repeatedly circle back to ideas, each time with a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the material. ~ Ellyn Sjoquist, Kane School student 2017
